On our first full day in Mexico City, we saw many cyclists on the street, passing by the Museo de Arte Moderno. Someone told us they were pilgrims heading to the basilica. So we hopped in a cab (that was a mistake but that’s another story) and went to see what was going on. We also went back the next day. This is an annual pilgrimage of bicyclists from Toluca, Mexico, about 40 miles away. They bike into the city, camp in the streets all around the basilica (Basilica de Santa Maria de Guadalupe) for two nights, all go to the basilica to get blessed during that time, and then are driven home in gaily decorated vehicles of all types (many are big trucks but there are all types and sizes of transportation, whatever the bikes will fit into). We had not heard of anything like this! It was epic, delightful, and impressive. Their faith in action. Pilgrims come to the basilica from all over, every day year around
